Annealing is used for several purposes
- Restore ductility after cold working.
- Reduce internal stresses from forming, welding and other operations.
- Improve toughness.
- Improve machinability.
Annealing involves heating a part above the upper critical temperature (as in full annealing) or to a lower temperature (as in subcritical or process annealing) followed by slow cooling.
