Atmosphere Carburizing

Gas carburizing is a case hardening process in which steel is heated into the austenitic region and exposed to a carbon-rich atmosphere. When the desired amount of carbon has diffused into the steel surface, the part is quenched creating a high-carbon martensitic case and a tough low-carbon steel core. Areas not to be carburized are masked off with a protective paint. Case depths can range from light (<0.015") to deep (0.120" and up).

NATIONAL HEAT TREAT can perform carburizing in any of our five(5) atmosphere furnaces.
